Setting Goals
By Kris Groda

After the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, the disciples were concerned about Jesus eating. Jesus told them, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of” (John 4:32). Not understanding his words, they asked each other saying, “hath any man brought him ought to eat?” (John 4:33). Jesus went on to explain, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34). Paul taught the Philippians, regarding his former confidence in the fleshly Jewish customs verses “the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:7). Paul followed up by saying, “This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil 3:13-14).

Though the words “goal setting” never appear in scripture, the concept is Biblical. “Goal” is defined as, “The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed; an end; objective.” For the most part, each of us set goals for ourselves in the secular arena. While, having secular goals can be a good thing, and very rewarding, we must not fail in prioritizing our goals. It would do us well if we would not remove ourselves from the likeness of the people who have been referenced in God's Holy Word.

Consider for a moment, the man of God, Moses. Acts 7:25 implies that Moses knew that God would use him to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt. For it says, “for he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not”. By this point in Moses' life, he had determined to please God. Hebrews 11:24-26 says, “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches, than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.”

Moses surely had the opportunity to set some secular goals, but we see that Moses had spiritual goals – having the goal of Heaven!
Ezra and Nehemiah, were both convicted, goal-oriented men of God. Ezra, one of the great reformers of Israel “had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord and do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments” (Ezra 7:10). Nehemiah, co-worker with Ezra in reforming Israel, motivated the people of Jerusalem to build their walls. Nehemiah said, “so built we the wall; and all the wall were joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work” (Neh. 4:6).

Just as the righteous children of God had Spiritual goals, Christians today are to have spiritual aims and ambitions. The Lord has set work before us in His Kingdom. When Jesus stated, “my meat is to do the will of Him who sent me, and to finish his work” (Jn. 4:34), He further stated, “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then commeth the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields: for they are white already to harvest” (Jn. 4:35). It is with the same attitude the North Jefferson church of Christ should have spiritual goals and then have the mind to press toward those marks!
