North Jefferson's Spring Gospel Meeting - Set for April 26-29
Spring 2009 is going to be chock full of Spiritual food and growth opportunities. With the events we have planned for the North Jefferson congregation and the area congregations, we would do well to be involved and use these evangelistic events as tools to reach our friends and neighbors who have not obeyed the Gospel of Christ. Kris Groda will be preaching our Spring Gospel Meeting, this will provide an opportunity for outreach and spiritual edification. It will also serve as a good opportunity for our community to get to hear and know our new preacher. Please save these dates and purpose to support our Spring Gospel Meeting!
The Egg Hunt is on … at the Stewart home ...and is scheduled for Saturday, April 4th from 2:30 p.m. until everyone goes home. There will be food, fun, and fellowship. This is open to everyone who wants to come. Bring something to sit on … and a basket if you want to hunt eggs. Please sign the list in the foyer so we can know how many to plan for. Also, if it rains, it will have to be postponed. Bring your favorite beverage ... and chips, water, tea, coffee will be provided.
We have included an insert in today’s bulleting as a reminder of items needed for the Navajo Clothing Drive. Please post this on your refrigerator or personal bulletin board for ready reference. Thanks.

What Husbands Owe Their Wives
By Kris Groda
Last week we examined the context of 1 Peter 3:1-6 and how wives are instructed to conduct themselves as being in subjection to their husbands. God’s Word teaches us that Christ-like behavior is essential if we are going to influence others for the good, especially those who are closest to us, our spouse. This week, we examine 1 Peter 3:7. In most contexts, in the Bible, where wives are being taught, husbands are also being taught. Peter likewise teaches, “ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heir together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.” The English Standard Version reads this way, “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered”. It should be said that “weaker vessel” in no way insinuates a spiritual or mental weakness, but rather a general physical characteristic is mentioned here. Peter teaches a man should dwell with his wife in a knowledgeable way - he should understand how his wife thinks. Husbands need to give “honor” to their wives realizing they are joint-heirs of the grace of life – which is the ultimate inheritance of heaven. So important is this that a man’s prayers can be “hindered”. This is a word that means to cut off, remove, prevent, or to render ineffectual. This is serious!
The husband is responsible for the spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being of his family and that begins with his wife. Paul stated, “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel” (1 Timothy 5:8). The etymology of the word “husband” is house band, or band around the house. He serves as the spiritual leader of the home. Paul also taught, “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Chris is God” (1 Cor. 11:3). Husbands are to sacrificially “love their wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Eph. 5:25). Husbands are to “love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his wife loves himself” (Eph 5:28). We’re not talking about a man who “lords” over his wife and family in a destructive, dictatorial way but a man will lead in a Christ-like manner. A man who will protect his wife from physical and spiritual dangers as Christ protects the church from evil.
Perhaps, this teaching is foreign to some who might call themselves “Christian”. We certainly know this is a foreign concept to those who are not “Christian”. In our pluralistic, humanistic culture, these concepts may be rejected. Many feminists would certainly reject such teaching and most men in the world are not that interested and thus, don’t pattern their role as husband after Christ. Paul used the husband and wife relationship, as God intends it, to illustrate the relationship between Christ and His church (Eph. 5:25,-27, 29, 32). Christ died for his bride (the church), He nourishes and cherishes the church, and desires holiness, purity and glory for His Bride (Eph. 5:25, 27, 29).
So, what do husbands owe their wives? The husband owes his wife emotional support, and physical provisions (Col. 3:19; 1 Tim 5:8; 1 Cor 7:5). And tantamount to that is the fact that the husband owes his wife spiritual teaching, guidance, and edification. “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, and he is the savior of the body” (Eph 5:23). Ever wonder what it might have been like if Adam would have had this mindset?
