How Do We Know What's Right?
Is There An Absolute Standard For Morality?

Hear Johnny Ramsey Speak From The Bible about Jesus, Salvation, the book of Revelation, Prayer, Great Bible Questions, & other life-changing Moral & Spiritual Issues

Welcome friends and brethren to our Spring Gospel Meeting, here at the meeting house of the North Jefferson Church of Christ. We hope you will be spiritually edified, and are sure you will benefit from each and every service you attend. We thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend this series of Gospel sermons, which will be delivered by one of the most powerful and Scripturally-knowledgeable preachers of our generation, brother Johnny Ramsey.

If you are visiting from our community, we hope you will be back to worship with us often. Our regular service times are printed on the front of this bulletin. If you have any questions about anything that is said or taught, or if you would like to know more about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and how you can become a member of Christ's church, then please ask any of our members. We will be happy to answer your questions, and to arrange a time to study God's Word with you!

We hope and pray that each participant in this Gospel endeavor will be filled with zeal to be faithful to God, as Scripture-filled lessons find lodging in good and honest hearts and bring forth fruit for powerful spiritual living, leading to everlasting life!
About Our Speaker For This Series...
A native of Sherman, Texas, Johnny B. Ramsey was educated at ACU, where he received both the BA and MA degrees in Biblical studies. A preacher of Christ's Gospel for over 50 years, Johnny has done foreign evangelistic work in Adelaide, Australia, and served as a local preacher for the Lord's church in Wisconsin, Colorado, North Dakota, Texas, and Utah. For many years he labored as an instructor at the Brown Trail School of Preaching, in Ft. Worth, where he was a regular speaker on the syndicated TV program, "The Truth In Love." The author of 13 books, and over 100 Bible tracts, Ramsey is sometimes affectionately called "Mr. Bible" by his students and friends, because of his phenomenal memorization and recall of the Holy Scriptures. Seemingly, he has committed to memory all 66 books of the Holy Bible, and will often quote more than 100 scripture texts in one of his dynamic 30-minute sermons or Bible classes. Accordingly, for many years he has been highly sought after as a Gospel Meeting preacher, having preached in over 1,100 Gospel Meetings in 48 states, and in 19 foreign countries.

We are indeed privileged to have Johnny and his helpmeet, Iris working and worshiping with us here at N Jefferson. You will not want to miss a single lesson of this life-changing Gospel series!    D. McCain

The Book of Books
(Part 3)
By: Johnny Ramsey

WHY IS THE BIBLE MISUNDERSTOOD?   Certainly we are not affirming that everyone understands the Scriptures.  Thousands misunderstood the sacred text.  But why?  Perhaps these suggested answers are the major reasons.

A. Many Fail to Study Intelligently
We are exhorted to make a diligent study of the Bible so that we will handle it properly (II Timothy 2:15).  If we were all noble like the Bereans we would "receive the word with all readiness of mind and search the Scriptures daily" (Acts 17:11).  Those who wish to profit from reading the Bible need to notice carefully the context of the passage.  Who wrote it?  To whom was it written?  When was it said?  What was the purpose?  What was the result of the situation described?  You would not get the gist of a stage play if you walked in during the second scene of the third act.  Neither could you properly learn algebra by beginning in the middle of the book and following a haphazard method of study.  But these absurd situations truly depict the type of approach so many make in Bible study.  No wonder so little is known about the Book of God!

B. Some Read with Preconceived Ideas
Prejudice is a greater enemy of the spiritual nature of man. It will cause us to read into the Bible our own biases opinions.  As the poet has stated:

"One reads with Father's specs upon his head
And sees the Book just as his father said
While others read to prove a pre-adopted
creed
Hence understand but little what they read,
For every passage in the book they bend
To make it suit that all-important end."

We must "receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save your souls" (James 1:21).  With Samuel we ought to say, "Speak Lord, thy servant heareth" (I Samuel 3:9).

C. Many  Are More Concerned with What
the Bible Does Not Say
If men were as interested in what the Bible does teach as they are in such foolish questions as "Where did Cain get his wife?" and "What kind of bush was on fire when God spoke to Moses?" we would see greater spiritual knowledge.  When someone asks me about Cain's wife I answer: "Friend, it is not proper to go through life worrying about another man's wife!"  One gospel preacher always said that "Cain got his wife at his father-in-law's house."  The important point in Bible study is to be concerned with practical passages that apply to us today.  We must be interested in what the Bible says about men instead of what men say about the Bible.

D. Lack of Study Is Greatest Reason for
   Misunderstanding the Scriptures
You cannot learn electronics without studying the subject carefully.  One will never learn how to fly an airplane until a close study of the subject has been made.  And, we can only understand the Bible by applying ourselves to the task.  A host of people say they would like to know more about the Book of books, but "actions speak louder than words."  Hosea, God's prophet, told the people of his day, as recorded in Hosea 4:6:
"My people are destroyed for lack of
  knowledge."

Unless we desire to know more about the Bible we never shall.  It ought to bother us when we cannot give a Bible reason for all that we believe and practice in religion.  Peter said:
"...Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you " (I Peter 3:15).

It takes constant study to obey this divine injunction.  But the effort is rewarding.
