And now for  …  FAMILY NEWS AND NOTES

Copies of the Minutes for the Men’s Business Meeting are available on the table in the foyer. If you are interested please take a copy.

LaWanta Garner is not doing well. She has serious physical problems and needs our prayers. Please add her to your prayer list.

Carl Lee had a heart catherization last Monday. No blockages were found and no stents inserted. Further tests were scheduled for Tuesday, June 10. No update on his condition at the printing of this bulletin.  Carl needs our prayers.

Hallie Lang has back problems and is in lots of pain. She works her yard and bent over to pick up an item and slipped a disc in her back. She could not walk back into her house, but crawled.  Please place her on your prayer list.

Lana Downs (friend of Jim & Barbara Duncan) has her leukemia in remission.  However, the cancer in her lung is spreading and they have now found cancer in her spine, bones, liver and the lining around her  brain.  She says she is not going to give up and she has already started treatment to try to slow the growth of the cancer or stop it completely.

The Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for the airport.  We were driving in the right lane, when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.  My taxi driver slammed on  his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!  The driver of the other car whipped his head round and started yelling at us.  My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.  And I mean he was really friendly.  So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that?   That guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!’  That is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, ‘The Law of the Garbage Truck.’  He explained that ‘many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment.  As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it, and sometimes they’ll dump it on you.  Don’t take it personally.  Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.  Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.  The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.  Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so ... love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don’t.  Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it.!’

Report On Vacation Bible School  -  June 9th – 13th, 2008
“Great Women of the Old Testament”

Thank You – Thank You – Thank You to all of our teachers, helpers, staff, and children who participated in our Vacation Bible School for 2008, on the theme of: “Great Women of the Old Testament.” We had a wonderful school this past week, as we studied about seven famous women from the times of the Old Testament, including: Sarah, Rachel & Leah, Hannah, Ruth & Naomi, and Esther. Our teachers and helpers worked diligently to decorate five different learning centers to look like the Bible lands and to help convey the setting and story for the different women that were studied. Also, our crafts workers did a wonderful job, as usual, coming up with craft ideas that would help to illustrate the Bible lessons being taught, and, of course, our kitchen staff provided us each day with some delicious refreshments.

We had good attendance each day, averaging 56.8 for the week in our daily attendance, counting both students and staff. Our high day was Tuesday with 59 students and staff in attendance. Daily totals for both students and staff were as follows: Monday–54, Tuesday–59, Wednesday–56, Thursday–58, and Friday–56. Our student attendance daily totals were: Monday–29, Tuesday–27, Wednesday–30, Thursday–31, and Friday–29, for a daily average of 29.2. What we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality with some very wonderful and well-behaved children, who really seemed to enjoy studying God’s Word with us.

I would like to give special accolades to the following personnel who went above and beyond the call of duty to volunteer their time, talents, and efforts to be involved with conducting this summer’s VBS. Special thanks to all the following teachers, helpers, and class workers: to Delores Traughber, Emilee Ferrell, & Joanna Armstrong, who taught the class on Esther; to Janice McCain, & Carolyn Sargent, who taught the class on Sarah; to Keely McCary, Karen Roper, & Connie Stewart, who taught the class on Ruth &  Naomi to Cindy Armstrong, Cathy Robison, & Ann Pickrel, who taught the class on Rachel & Leah; and to Stephanie Sparks, & Jeannie Pat Jaggers who taught the class on Hannah.

Special thanks also for our craft workers, which were headed up by Shannon Hargrove, and her staff of faithful helpers, including: Patsy Duncan, Tyler Hargrove, Sarah Sparks, Ben McCain, & Tyler Shipley. We also want to thank  our utility or roving workers who worked where they were needed each day, but mostly helped out with the special needs of our two younger classes. These “rovers” included: Linda Jones, Lucy Anguiano, Emily Allton, & Emily Robison. And, of course, we can’t forget our kitchen crew who were the favorites of students and staff alike. Veleta McFerrin did her usual wonderful job of coordinating our refreshments each day, which included not just cookies, but many healthy snacks of fruit and cheese, and even “watermelon” on Thursday and “pigs in a blanket” on Friday. Her faithful staff each day included Dorothy & Charles Kyle, & Amy Jones. Rounding out our outstanding crew was Bob Hedges and Rhodney Freeman, who took care of many behind the scenes chores like our advertising, attendance and record keeping, bell ringing, and preparing our awards certificates. And, finally, special thanks to Russ Allton, Amy Jones grandson, who served as our staff photographer recording each day’s activities with his camera for a PowerPoint presentation that we showed Friday night at our closing program. Our hat is off to all our volunteers for a great school, and if I forgot anyone, you have my sincere apology.                  David McCain
