[Guest Article from The Southwesterner—Southwest church of Christ—Ada, OK]
The following is an article by one of our college students who has shown impressive abilities to serve in the church. This article bears testimony as well as to the value of this program and the work that Johnie does. —Floyd
Have you ever started a project and not finished it? Truth be known, I believe I have twice the amount of unfinished projects compared to finished projects. I got to thinking to myself, “Self, why do I start so many things and never finish them?” There is a whole list of reasons (excuses) that I can say make myself feel better about dropping a project after it gets too hard.
#1. I’m too tired. #2. I’m ready for something new. #3. I found something better to do.
The list could go on. The fact of the matter is when it is all said and done, if you start something without finishing it, you wasted you time in starting it. Am I wrong?
I know you’re asking yourself, “Where exactly is he going with this?” Well here it is.
As Christians, have we started this “project” of being a Christian and then just sort of dropped it? Were we on fire at the beginning but then sort of fizzle out?
I would like to direct your attention to these passages:
Luke 9:62—”But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Luke 14:29—”lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, “This man began to build and was not able to finish.”
Do not misunderstand me, CHRISTIANITY IS HARD! I have hit my share of rough patches along the way. Unlike the other projects I have started and then dropped, Christianity is different in every way. Because my excuses listed above no longer apply. I can’t be “too tired.” God takes care of his children. He helps me even when I feel I can’t go on. As far as wanting something new … there are always, ALWAYS, more people out there who need to hear the gospel. And finding something better to do? If you find something better than living for God and helping ring others to Christ, you let me know. Let’s not allow Christianity to become a “dropped project.”
1 Corinthians 9:24—”Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.”
Run this race in order to obtain the prize! There are a lot of you guys out there that have helped me tremendously along the way. I want to thank you for keeping me on track. You know who you are. I hope and pray I am able to help you along your way as well. I love you all. And keep it up!
