RULES FOR IMPROVING ATTITUDES IN THE CHURCH
(Bulletin Digest—from Southwest church of Christ—Ada, OK)

Tell yourself over and over since you are not perfect, you would not fit into a “perfect” congregation if one existed.
Instead of picking out the world members to point to, select the sincere, dedicated, spiritual members and thank god for them.
If you are old, treat the young with the consideration  you desire as a young person.  If you are young, treat adults with the respect you will want when you are mature.
When you are tempted to criticize others, be sure to pray earnestly for them first.  This may not change them, but I will do wonders for your attitude.
When s a work neglected, instead of being critical, offer to help.
Never blame others for your own failures.  Every individual can be faithful to God in spite of the bad examples and discouraging attitudes of others.
Remind yourself every day that the only way you can improve the world or the Church is to begin with self.
Constantly look for the good qualities in each brother and sister in Christ; make a mental note of the good points each possesses.
Constantly strive to increase your circle o associates in the church.  Try to do something for each.
Every church has problems. Constantly ask yourself, “Am I a part of the problem, a part of the solution, or merely a critical spectator?”

TIME TO GET AWAY
By: Johnie D Fredman
[Guest Article from The Southwesterner—Southwest church of Christ—Ada, OK]

Most of us enjoy taking vacations and ‘getting away from it all.’  Some of us tend to play outside of the lines.

Vacations are good.  Some of us probably need to take more of them than we do.  We need time to get away from our normal daily routines and from the stresses of everyday life.  We often get caught up in our routines and responsibilities and allow work and things in the world to control much more of our lives than we are willing to admit.  It is good for us to take a break, get away and have time to refocus and reenergize ourselves.

What do you do to get away?  Many of us take trips to special places.  We like to go see shows and entertainers, or go to amusement parks.   Many people like to go hiking or skiing.  Some like to just go to nature and camp out and enjoy being alone.  Even Jesus took time to get away.  In Matthew 14, Jesus is informed of the death of John the Baptist.  Verse 13 tells us, “When Jesus heart it, He departed fro there by boat to a deserted place by Himself.”  Again, in John 6:15, “… He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.”  Even Jesus occasionally needed to “get away from it all.”

There is one key difference between our ‘vacations’ and Jesus’.    All too often, when we say we are going to “get away from it all,”  we truly mean all.  We leave with the full intent of getting away from everything.  We leave behind the cares of the job, the bills, and the problems of life.  Unfortunately, we often also leave behind the cares of the church.  We go and try to get away from everything, including God.  When Jesus went to get away from the cares of the world, He did it by getting away with God.

In Matthew 14:23, Jesus goes off by Himself to pray and spend time with the Father.  In Luke 9:18, we again see Jesus praying alone.  In Mark 1:35, Jesus get up long before daylight to spend some quiet time along praying to God.  Of course, most well known, He goes off by Himself to pray in the garden just before his betrayal (Matt. 26:36 ff.).

When you need to get away, do you go with God or leave Him behind?  Do you regularly attend worship while away on vacation?  Do you make up your contribution for the work of the church here when you return?  When not on vacation, are you willing to lose an hour or so of sleep as Jesus did to spend time with God so He can help you withy life’s struggles. I know we all need time to get away, but wherever we go, let’s go with God.
