Mark your calendar and plan to attend here at the building in the Multi-Purpose Room beginning at 2:00 p.m. August 16th for a Birthday Party honoring our beloved Irene Duncan and wishing her a Happy 100th Birthday.

Weldon & JoAnn Miller have a new great granddaughter, born July 17, 2008, weighing in at 7 lbs 14 ounces. Her name is Halley (pronounced like her mother’s first name) Carmen Campos.  Her parents Gabe and Meredith Campos, who live in Glen Rose, Texas, are the new parents. The grandparents are Dana and Joe Rigano, who also live in Glen rose.

Irene Duncan has been dismissed from the hospital and is not at her home. She says she is doing fine.

Keep Michael Gilbert of DeKalb church of Christ in  your prayers. He is undergoing treatment(s) for cancer. He had surgery last Monday.

Wade Miller has been told by his doctor to stay off his feet for a few weeks to allow his diabetic sores to heal that he has on his feet. Wade is having lots of problems and he needs our prayers.

THANK YOU ….. “I want to thank everyone for all the prayers, cards and phone calls.  I think I have received a card from everyone at North Jefferson and from some more than once.
I will be leaving the hospital tomorrow and going home.  I will be receiving rehab at home and will be out and around soon.
Please don’t forget us.

(Note: this not was receive last week but was misplaced and found again on Friday.)

“Dear Brothers & Sisters: Thank you for your phone calls, and the many cards.  I appreciate your words of encouragement.  Although I have a problem with diabetic ulcers on my right foot and toes, there is light at the end of the tunnel.  With plenty of bed rest and staying off my feet.  The recovery time will be shorter.  I can be up for brief periods, as long as improvement continues and I wear a protective boot.  Again, thanks for your prayers and concern on my behalf.
— Wade Miller”

Forget or Remember?
—Floyd Kaiser
[Guest Article from The Southwesterner—Southwest church of Christ—Ada, OK]

Webster’s dictionary defines memory as “the power or act of remembering.”  For some of us, remembering is more difficult than for others.  Like when I walk to the secretary’s office only to forget why I came. Whether it is short-tern or long-term memory,  all have experienced the frustration and embarrassment of forgetting a name, an appointment, a birthday or where we left the car keys.

We would all expect the power of memory to affect each person’s lifestyle. However, what about our religion?  Will memory help or hinder?
‘By the mere number of times the words ‘recall’ or ‘remember’ are used in the Bible, no doubt it is important.  In the Old Testament, one or the other is used 145 time and 34 times in the New.

A prominent feature of God Himself is His memory.  He does not forget, except by choice, as in the forgiveness of sins (see Heb. 10:17). For thousands of years, He remembered His promises to be a source of comfort to all his people and send a Savior.  In Psa. 111:5, it is written “He will remember his covenant forever.”
The Israelites of the Old Testament were commanded to remember certain things.  They were to remember the day God delivered them from Egypt (Ex. 13:3), they were to remember their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob Ex. 31:12).  They were to remember throughout the generations the forty years in the wilderness, its failures and triumphs (Deut. 8:2).
Is there something for us to remember?

We are to remember the words of our Lord, those actually spoken by Him and those given to the inspired writers of the New Testament. In acts 20:35, the apostle Paul says,” ...remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” In 2 Tim. 2:8 it is written remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according  to my gospel.”  Peter writes, ...you should remember the words  spoken beforehand by the hold prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles” (2 Pet. 3:2).  In Jude 1:17 it is written, “But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Also, we are to remember certain people who are in need — “remember” as in doing something about their needs. For instance we are to remember the poor (Acts 20:35, Gal. 2:10), the prisoners  (Heb. 13:3) and those who are our spiritual leaders (Heb. 13:77,  1 Cor. 11:2).

Finally we are to remember certain periods in life, such as our hopelessness before we are saved (Eph. 2:11, 12) and seasons of suffering for our confession (Heb. 10:32).

But what about forgetting?
In Phil. 3:13, 14 it is written, “ Brethren, I do not regard  myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”  The guilt, powerlessness, and insecurity in our lives before we were saved are in the past. They need to be kept there.  They no longer have a place in the mind of God’s people.
A clear principle of godly living is knowing what to remember and what to forget.  Knowing the difference is a key feature of wisdom.
