UPCOMING YOUTH OUTING (and for the young at heart) . On Monday evening, June 13, we will take a trip to THE BALL PARK in Arlington to see the Rangers play the Atlanta Braves.  The Mount Vernon congregation has invited us to join their youth on this trip as a joint outing.  Great, field-level box seats have been secured (normally $30 tickets) for just $7 a ticket.  There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the foyer. Only about 25 tickets are still available, so sign up soon if you wish to go. See David McCain if you have any questions.

A PRAYER MUCH NEEDED!
Guest Article from The Southwesterner
Published by Southwest Church of Christ - Ada, OK

Warren Wiersbe in a book, Be Hopeful, writes that every Christian should pray Psalm 141:3 daily.
When I read this, of course, I quickly grabbed my Bible to see what Mr. Wiersbe thought was so important that it should be prayed every day.  Here is what I read, "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips."
Mr. Wiersbe and I agree.
This verse suggests three principles.
EVERYONE HAS A PROBLEM CONTROLLING SPEECH.  David, the author of this Psalm, is not speaking just of himself; he speaks as a representative of mankind.  James wrote, "For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.  But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison." (James 3:7-8).
The untamed nature of the tongue is why James wrote, "Let not many of you become teachers" (3:1).  The single most important tool of the teacher is the tongue.  Therefore, since the tongue is wild, it should not be used to teach until it has been refined and disciplined.
Untamed, indeed!  Think about the times when you have thought, "I wish I hadn't said what I just did."
The reason why the tongue is so difficult to control is because it is emotional.  It is animated by anger, frustration and desperation.  We never say what we don't mean; however, what we mean one minute may not be what we mean the next.  Sometimes the tongue works before the mind is engaged.
WORDS POSSESS TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL FOR HARM.
In counseling I've become especially aware of how words of serious hurt can be remembered for decades.  Way into adulthood words spoken when one was a child can be remembered and re-felt as if it  were only yesterday.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" must have been written by someone totally void of feelings.  For the rest of us, while bones may heal, the damage done by words can be irreparable.
Again, James wrote, "See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!  And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell" (3:5b-6).
GOD CAN HELP US CONTROL OUR WORDS.  Listen to this prayer again. "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips."
David constructs a very visual plea.  He asks the Lord about a "guard" and a "door" of his lips.  He wants the Lord to help control, screen what comes out of his mouth.
This prayer of course does not completely absolve man of his own responsibility to guard himself.  in Proverbs 13:3 it is written, "The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; the one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin."  I have a duty to think before I speak and to allow my thinking to be programmed by the word of God.
However, even with the rest of my efforts, I still must have the power of God.  After all, part of the fruit of the Spirit is self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).  The mouth is so ruthless that God alone can tame it.
Will you put Psalms 141:3 in your prayers today?  Before it's too late!

ONE OF THOSE DAYS

The staff at the coffee shop was having "one of those days."  The espresso machine was malfunctioning; the bakery had not delivered the bagels and sweet rolls; someone from the morning shift called in sick; and the crew from the previous evening failed to restock the cabinets with supplies.  There were several people waiting to get their first cup of coffee for the day.
A woman at the back of the line began to complain loudly. "What is taking so long? Are you growing the beans back there or what? I don't have all day!"
"Yes, we are running on empty this morning," the manager said with a pleasant smile. He motioned for the woman to come forward. "What can I get for you?"
"I want a large coffee with steamed milk  to go," barked the woman.
"No problem," said the manager. He looked past the woman to the other customers waiting in line and offered them a reassuring wink.  In a matter of moments he had made the woman's coffee, took her money, and sent her on her way with a "Have a nice day."
The other customers stood silently with confused looks on their faces.
The manager said, "Folks, I'm really sorry for the inconvenience this morning.  Because you have been so patient, your coffee is on the house."
