THANK YOU ... "Dear Christian Friends at North Jefferson Church of Christ:
I am so very thankful for your expressions of love at the death of my husband, Carroll D. Phillips. Hats Off! - A Tribute To Old Glory & Godly-Mothers
Kids today won't understand the metaphor because they wear their ball caps everywhere they go, but the older generation remembers the days when hats or caps were always removed to show respect in certain situations. The passing of our nation's flag was one such occasion. A favorite poem I remember from childhood describes the scene. Henry Holcomb Bennett, penned the immortal prose "The Flag Goes By."

Hats off! Along the street there comes, a blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums, a flash of color beneath the sky: Hats off! The flag is passing by! Blue and crimson and white it shines, over the steel tipped, ordered lines. Hats off! The colors before us fly; but more than the flag is passing by. Sea-fights and land-fights, grim and great, fought to make and to save the State: weary marches and sinking ships; cheers of victory on dying lips; days of plenty and years of peace; march of a strong land's swift increase; equal justice, right and law, stately honor and reverend awe; sign of a nation, great and strong, to ward her people from foreign wrong: pride and glory and honor, - all, live in the colors to stand or fall. Hats off! Along the streets there comes, a blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums; and loyal hearts are beating high: Hats off! The flag is passing by!

Another situation where hats were removed was when a man was in the presence of a woman. This was especially true when the woman was a God-fearing woman, or the man's sister, wife, or mother. With the "hats off" metaphor in mind, and with all due respect for the godly women among our flock here at North Jefferson, and especially for our faithful mothers, who are trying to raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, the following tribute is offered from your preacher's poetic pen.

Hats off! A godly mother is passing by. From the hallway of the education wing she comes, a vision in silk being showered by crumbs, from the Nilla' wafers her toddler holds, mixed with slobber from her baby just retrieved from the "cradle roll." Down the aisle she goes with Junior in tow, like a little octopus he grabs each row, but she with practiced and patient care, releases his grasp, and smoothes his hair, all the while managing to maintain a smile, while greeting the brethren on every aisle. She's barely settled in her pew, when Junior informs her he's in a stew. "I've got to go "NOW," he yells out loud, drawing some laughter from the stirring crowd. So she bows her head and whispers a prayer, "God give me patience and help me not to care, when my kids embarrass me in front of my peers, almost bringing me to tears." Then wondering why her husband has been called to lead, she asks the kindly man at the end of the pew, if he would go assist Junior take care of his need. Then feeling guilt for questioning her serving spouse, she becomes as quiet as a mouse, and with trembling lip she utters another prayer, "Father forgive me for my lack of care, for I'm blessed to have a husband who can lead, who will help me teach these children to live by your creed." And now with new determination she faces her kids, and asks God for the grace to keep from blowing her lid. She digs in her bag to find the bottle she prepared, while telling Junior in no uncertain terms to quit pulling Sissy's hair. It's a fight to the finish, a veritable endurance race, to keep the baby quiet and the other two in place, through a service that runs ten minutes long, because of a windy preacher and an extra song. But this sweet godly mother offers not one complaint, for she realizes precious souls are being trained to walk through Heaven's gate. As the service ends, she gathers her brood, and her husband meets her in a happy mood. With a smile on his face and a wink in his eye, he says to the crowd, "Hats off! My godly wife is passing by!"

Indeed, our hats are off to all godly mothers who sacrifice, and love, and give, and work, and cook, and clean, and sew, and mend; who get up early and stay up late to provide a good home for their husband and children; who change diapers, and wash bottles and clothes and dirty little boys; who kiss the hurt, and bandage skinned knees, and brush away tears, and who say, "brush your teeth, and comb your hair, and wash behind your ears;" who read Bible stories to their little ones, and who fall asleep at night praying they will be successful in raising Junior and Sissy and Baby to be faithful Christians. Thanks Moms, we love you and God does too!                                    David McCain

As I finish this, Janice is already on her way to be with our daughter, Amanda, who has just gone into labor with our first grandchild. It's a boy (I hope)  -  have a bulletin! I've got to fly!
